High School of Commerce (first) opens.

October 31, 1907

Architect: Peabody & Stearns. The school is located on Longwood Avenue in a four-building complex with Boston Normal School and Girls Latin School. At the dedication ceremony, Mayor John F. Fitzgerald declares, “Well, it is high time to give Boston a reputation for other than a centre of ancestor-worship or a paradise of faddists.” Graduates include Fred Allen and John Rock. The school is second in enrollment only to English High School by 1915. It moves to a nearby new building (second) in 1915.* The original building is now occupied by the Massachusetts College of Art.
